Option to not create auto expiration date when clicking in an approval

When clicking inside an approval, an expiration date is automatically created for it. If an admin user forgets to clear that field out, then the approval will get an unwanted expiration date assigned to it. Can this auto-populated expiration date be turned off if not wanted - maybe in the quotes section of the admin?
